  82. Internet users can now access hundreds of sources of current
  83. government information from around the world -- Census data,
  84. Supreme Court decisions, world health statistics, company
  85. financial reports, weather forecasts, United Nations information,
  86. daily White House press briefings and much more. The Internet has
  87. become a rich resource for government information, in part
  88. because works produced by many government agencies are not
  89. eligible for copyright protection.
  90.  
  91. So, while government agencies have been criticized for not making
  92. more information available online, enterprising individuals and
  93. organizations have themselves made a wealth of sources available
  94. via the network. A growing number of government agencies too are
  95. beginning to establish systems that can be accessed remotely. You
  96. can now e-mail the President, and enactment by Congress last year
  97. of the Government Printing Office Electronic Information Access
  98. Improvement Act assures the U.S. government's role in
  99. distributing information electronically will increase. A variety
  100. of other proposals suggest that in the future, more and more
  101. information produced by state, local and international
  102. governmental organizations will also be available online,
  103. sometimes exclusively.
  104.  
  105. In many cases, there are significant advantages to the sources
  106. accessible online over what can be found in the library or via
  107. other means. Internet resources are often more up-to-date than
  108. their paper counterparts. Frequently they can be searched by
  109. keyword. Sometimes they provide information simply not available
  110. in more traditional formats. A word of warning is necessary,
  111. though. Internet resources are constantly changing. What is
  112. available one minute may not be available the next. System
  113. addresses, source directories and file names are often changed
  114. without notice. Sometimes a remote system may be temporarily
  115. unavailable.
  116.  
  117. This is the second edition of a guide to Internet sources of
  118. government information originally created for the students,
  119. faculty and staff of Temple University. The second edition
  120. includes more than 325 sources, two-thirds of which were not
  121. listed in the first edition. The sources listed are intended to
  122. provide the simplest and clearest route known to the information
  123. described. The preferred source is often a Gopher source because
  124. of the ease of using the Gopher software. Often, however, there
  125. are several sources for the same information. Some may allow more
  126. sophisticated file manipulation. Frequently files can be
  127. downloaded to your personal computer using a feature known as
  128. file transfer protocol (FTP).
  129.  
  130. When the source listed is a Gopher source, the instructions
  131. assume users can escape the local Gopher menu structure to
  132. connect directly to a remote Gopher. This can normally be done by
  133. issuing the Gopher command in combination with a remote system
  134. address from your system's ready prompt. Contact your local
  135. systems administrator if this doesn't work. Many files accessible
  136. via Gopher are also available using a Telnet command, but don't
  137. assume a Gopher source can be accessed via Telnet. Telnet sources
  138. usually require an account or password and are sometimes not
  139. intended for outside use.

  141. The second edition of this guide includes a few changes from the
  142. first. Because the new edition features many more sources than
  143. the first, sources in this edition are arranged by subject rather
  144. than alphabetically. Each source is listed in only one subject
  145. category. Sources that include information about a wide variety
  146. of subjects are usually included in one of three general
  147. categories that begin the list. Additional access points have
  148. also been added for many sources. Often in the first edition only
  149. a single access point was provided, typically a Gopher source. I
  150. now realize some Internet users do not have direct Gopher access,
  151. so I have supplied Telnet addresses when known. Instructions for
  152. retrieving files via FTP are generally not provided unless the
  153. information is otherwise unavailable. System addresses, source
  154. directories and file names for all sources have been verified at
  155. least twice. I have added in parenthesis the date I last accessed
  156. the source using the information provided.

  158. The "path" listed is the "address" of the remote computer system
  159. where the information described can be found, along with the
  160. steps a user must take to locate the particular directory or file
  161. that contains the information. Slashes in the path separate
  162. commands, steps, or levels in a menu or file hierarchy.
  163. The first part of any path is a command statement that must be
  164. executed to access the remote source of the information. Type the
  165. first part of the path, up to any slashes, and press the Enter
  166. key. If there are no slashes, type the entire phrase.
